This past weekend, I achieved a personal goal that earlier this year seemed almost impossible: I ran (and completed) an 18-mile race.
At this distance, every runner must adapt to unexpected conditions…tired and tight muscles, cramping, changes in the weather…it’s not easy. Those who finish push through the pain and continue to run, one step at a time.
The experience reminded me that starting something new is hopeful, exciting…and easy. Finishing what you started is challenging and painful.
Sounds familiar, right?

Reminds me of a line I heard from Steve Jobs when he spoke at Stanford and was referring to being fired from Apple at the age of 30. He said that he realized the “heaviness of success had been replaced by the lightness of being a beginner.”
Mike, great point. I remember that speech…only after taking time away was he able to realize he that he really loved what he did…and the “lightness of being a beginner” helped him to rededicate himself to his work.
I am now 60 and completed 3 half marathons and one full marathon in the last 12 months. It has helped me immensely in my focus, and certainly assist in goal setting. Met some very wonderful people through this process.
Daniel, I couldn’t agree more. I always felt that my goal setting and focus couldn’t improve – but running races demonstrated otherwise. And I’ve met some incredible in the process as well! I’m thrilled to belong to this “tribe.”
